Playing Softball When You Are Eight

April 17, 2026

My granddaughter is just starting spring softball here in TN. This will be her second full year of playing. Some of it is actually painful to watch. Some of it is utterly fascinating knowing that we all started something in our lives without much immediate talent and just a bit of noise.

She is the cheerleader. She is the noisy one. She is the hugger. She is the one who says “nice job” to the good players and the really awful players. Softball was my sport. My first born daughter ended up playing championship ball for 4 years – and was awful when she first started playing.

3rd generation girls softball is truly a challenge to watch from the bleachers. As the gramma, I am not allowed to coach from the sides, be too loud, yell “you have got to be kidding me”, or talk to the other coaches during the game and not much after the game. As an executive business coach, these are hard, but good lessons. But ya know what, I can write about it. 😊
