Perfectly Communicating Takes Way Too Long
January 21, 2026
The standard of “it must be perfect” before it can be communicated or shared can often keep us from communicating at all. What really is perfection anyway? Are we afraid of the receiver of the information and worry that we will be judged if it is not perfect? Are you over sharing data so you look smarter and make the report just a bit longer? Are you asking people to edit a document again just so you can delay the dreaded response that somehow your work is not perfect?
All perfection is transitory. Find out what the recipient needs and wants in order to be timely and clear in the information/data you provide. Asking for clarity is really OK. In fact, it supports getting stuff done in timely ways.
Confidence and perfection are not necessarily good partners. Confidently sharing information/data that is clear and well done allows us the privilege of communicating in a timely way. The standard of anything needing to be perfect can cause doubt and delay.
