What does forgiving someone really mean?

I looked up the definition of forgiving and it was not very satisfying so I found “instead” words that could be used in the place of forgiving. Merciful, lenient, compassionate, magnanimous, humane, mild, softhearted, forbearing, tolerant, easygoing, indulgent, accommodating, understanding.

Note that in the samples there is not a reference to forgetting the action or situation for forgiving. We do not need to forget the issue, we just need to allow ourselves the space to understand that the pain inflicted does not have to consume us any longer.

The more we are consumed by the situation we never thought we could forgive, the more power it has over us…it also influences us in how we act and think. Forgive yourself too. Once you include you in your forgiving, life is easier…so much easier.
