How in the heck do I control the communication when they won’t stop talking?

This is a real problem with the leaders I am working with…in fact they avoid the “talkers” because they cannot get away from them. Sometimes people need to talk, but with our busy schedules, we could set up the dynamics of the conversation before it happens.

Example: “Hey Joe, lets have a call today at 2:30. I know we are both busy, so here is the data I would like to review. Let me know if this works for you or if you need to discuss anything else.” If Joe has a topic, then add it to the list.

At the beginning of the call, restate the topics and then discuss. If Joe tries to take you off topic, interrupt (yes interrupt) and restate the topics. If you get caught in the hall with a talker, look at your phone or watch and tell them you have 5 minutes and what would be most important for them to discuss in this conversation. If it is complicated, set up a scheduled time restricted appointment to go over the information. If you practice this enough, you will learn a lot about how they and how you really communicate.
