Listening Well Is More Than Waiting To Talk

A dear friend of mine wrote a terrific article years ago called “Listening Is Not Just Waiting To Talk”. It is a good reminder for all of us who are in a big hurry to get everything done. I do not think there is such a thing as “fast listening”. However, I think once you set the context of what is important to speak about, things can move at a speed to create the success you want with the information you discuss.

Zoom/Team/Skype – whatever method of live screen time you use, listening is even more critical. Being on screen can feel like you are not there with the person/people who are speaking and you need to let them know you are. Interrupting the speaker is irritating and shows real time disrespect. Listening is being present, nodding, using your body language and maybe even asking questions about the information being presented.

Some of the most delicious times you will ever experience, is being fully listened to…don’t just wait to talk. Give the other(s) the time and presence they need to be heard. Great leaders listen.
