How do you check in with people who you think might need you?

The world, including ourselves, have gotten pretty sensitive about being asked how they are…inferring that maybe everything is not ok?? My comment to that is a big “so what”. There are many ways to check in with people, whether they get offended or not. Just ask them how is everything going?

My typical call to people can sound like the following: “It has been some time since we chatted, so I am calling because I want to know how you are.” Most of the time they ask me how I am doing so I am ready with my response: “I am good, but life has been anything but unchaotic…how about you?” You then give people a chance to let you know how they are. And you know what, if you are being encouraged by your gut to get in touch with someone, they probably really need to hear from you.

No lectures to them please. Just listen. Remember the last time someone really listened to you and how wonderful that felt? Listening has become a lost art because of the speed with which we now think “things” need to get done. No speediness is needed. Just listen.
