How can you be honest with someone when you know it might affect the performance/relationship?

Difficult conversations are best done within a reasonable period of time from the moment the difficulty starts. I’ve worked with HR and Executives that have waited weeks and months before “having the talk” with someone. Not only is that not fair, it creates a whole other layer to the initial issue(s) – yours and theirs.

Honesty requires accuracy. What outcome do you want from a conversation or performance discussion? Increased performance? Better communication? More timely work? Definite transparency during current situations and conversations? If someone you often communicate with is not giving you all the information and facts needed, there is a mistrust that automatically shows up.

Honesty is: accuracy; timeliness; detailed facts of the situation; outcomes stated regarding next steps and performance and consideration of the person or situation you are trying to get straightened out.
