How do you know when you are coaching and when you are lecturing?
When you are coaching with someone to help them shift their performance or results, the process is to ask what and how questions. Avoid the use of “why” as it can sound accusatory.
Decide what you think needs to be supported or corrected and start there. Asking the other person how they are; what is the issue; what would support look like to them; what is working; what is missing…these are coaching questions. Try to never “tell” the other everything you need to say before you find out what their real needs are.
Find out what is most important and then support, coach and give feedback.
