Why “lost” is the new message of “next”…

Why “lost” is the new message of “next”…

My clients, who are excellent and experienced executives and leaders, are feeling somewhat lost and defeated because of their apparent lack of control and completion in their new normal. They want to control their next steps; get it done now so it all makes sense; complete the necessary details to put the “new” in place and to stop feeling lost and sad.

As an Army brat, I have said goodbye so many times to places and people who I thought I would/could possibly die without. But we don’t. We transfer to a new base, school, home, church, and everything begins to feel good again. We meet people. We delight in the new spots that become our own. We find that amazing ice cream spot that fills us with joy. (Think Andy’s Custard – yuuummmm).

Think of this as you being transferred to a new place that needs to be learned, but not criticized. My mom told me when I was a teenager and I moved from NC to Ankara, Turkey – “all your clothes will be new because they have never seen them before”. Trust me, that helped. I never forgot that maybe it will be good at this “new place”. New normal, old normal. You have the absolute choice on whether you bring a sense of wonder with you or an attitude of “no way”.
