How do you handle the challenge of doing something for the first time?

BP (before pandemic) and DP (during pandemic) and AP (after pandemic) – before the pandemic we had our challenges with doing something new. Lots of us made up stories about the challenge being too hard; we don’t know how to do it; what if I fail; what is the point, I am not so good at that anyway. Then somewhere and somehow (lots of times supported by our colleagues and coaches) we put together a plan and do the “first-time” thing…little kids close their eyes and leap. I know some big kids – myself included -that close their eyes and leap.

Today we don’t have any examples of what AP (after pandemic) will look like. We have hopes, but certainly not any guarantees. Guarantees seem to have gotten lost. So, we are now DP (during pandemic). How are you doing? Many many of the people I have spoken with and coached don’t think they are doing well at all. They are afraid; angry and feeling out of control with the next steps. Not such a great spot to be in…

EXCEPT you are dealing with it very well. You are up, mostly dressed, dealing with what needs to be done and stressing about what you don’t know. Welcome to the new normal. I just want to emphasize that you are doing it. Give yourself some credit. Tell that terrific and remarkable person, quaking in their slippers, how proud you are of them…YOU. Do not do this alone. I’ve been supporting crisis challenged people my entire career.

P.S. This list of “seize the opportunity” is not my idea, although I think it is a brilliant idea. It is a list of things that can help fill your time productively while at home – for those of you that are at your physical workplace, find someone at home to work on the list for you. And, thank you for all the healthcare, first responders and retail people who are keeping us safe and fed.
